Case Study: Lockheed Martin - August 2022

Location: Santa Barbara, CA

Problem Statement: Lockheed Martin, a global security and aerospace company, contacted Safety Rail Source® to assist in providing rooftop fall protection for two of their buildings in Santa Barbara, California. The requirement was to protect almost 2000 linear feet of roof edge and to protect various roof hatches and skylights. Additionally, two large crossovers were needed to replace the existing arrangement of planks-on-top-of-beams. These rooftop safety measures are required by OSHA standards: 1910.28, 1910.29 and 1910.22.

Problem Resolution: In cooperation with Teresa Ortiz at The Towbes Group, Hal Swindell of Safety Rail Source® surveyed the rooftop in February of 2022 and developed a comprehensive fall protection plan. The proposed and executed solution included a total of 1,925 linear feet of NextGen 3000™ Universal Guardrail, one KeeHatch® Roof Hatch Railing, one free-standing roof hatch railing, several NextGen Skylight Safety-Screens, NextGen 3000 Skylight Railing and two NextGen Crossover Stairways & Platforms.

Shop drawings were provided by Safety Rail Source® which were then reviewed and approved by city officials as well as by experts at PK Architecture, based in Agoura Hills, California.

Installation was completed in July of 2022 by Jon Wadell, owner of Wadell Roofing Services, based in Santa Barbara, California. Hal Swindell was also on site during the installation to ensure that OSHA standards were met. Jon and his team successfully completed the entire project in approximately 2 weeks.
