Case Study: Danone - North America, January 2020

Location: Jacksonville, Florida

Problem Statement: Danone S.A., a multinational food-products corporation headquartered in Paris, France contacted Safety Rail Source to assist in providing rooftop fall protection for its United States facilities. The requirement was to bring their rooftops into compliance with OSHA Code 1910.28(b)(13) which states that when work is performed less than 6 feet (1.6 m) from the roof edge, the employer must ensure each employee is protected from falling. In addition, each employee must be protected from falling through any hole in the roof (including skylights & roof hatches) that is 4 feet or more above a lower level.

Problem Resolution: At the request of Plant Engineer, Ed Wigglesworth, Hal Swindell and Jeff Engelhardt of Safety Rail Source® surveyed 13 roofs and developed a comprehensive fall protection program that included more than 3,500 LF of NextGen 3000® Universal Guardrail roof edge railing, 2 pyramid skylight railings, 15 corrugated NextGen Skylight Safety-Screens™ and numerous Kee® Self-Closing Gates. The railing was finished with TS-22 coating custom painted in “Danone blue”. Railing bases were coated in safety yellow. The biggest challenge was installing railing in hard to reach roof areas and installing over and around the myriad of roof obstructions. The project was installed by Jose Rezex of Innovative Contracting Services. The installation lasted approximately 6 weeks.
