Case Study: Danone North America October 2020

Location: City of Industry, California

Problem Statement: Danone S.A., a multinational food-products corporation headquartered in Paris, France contacted Safety Rail Source® to assist in providing rooftop fall protection for its United States facilities. For its California facilities, not only do federal OSHA Standards apply, the more stringent Cal/OSHA Standards must be met.

The main challenges at the City of Industry Plant were there were 7 roof levels including 3 penthouse roofs. Also, some roofs were riddled with pipe, conduit, and ductwork obstructions.

To bring Danone’s roofs to current safety standards, Cal/OSHA required protection for 2,845 LF of roof edge, 50 domed skylights, and 38 skylight vents. Two crossovers, one ladder and platform needed removal and replacement.

Problem Resolution: Luis Torga of Danone contacted Safety Rail Source for assistance. Jose Rezex visited Luis and performed a detailed rooftop survey and in consultation with Hal Swindell of Safety Rail Source, developed a comprehensive fall protection program to meet Cal/OSHA Standards. The program was executed by installing 2,845 LF of freestanding NextGen 3000 Universal Guardrail roof edge railing using 7 ½’ post-to-post rail sections, 38 NextGen 3000 Universal Skylight Railing, 50 NextGen Skylight Safety-Screens at a 400 lb. rating and Kee® Self-Closing Gates. The railing was finished with TS-22 coating in Danone Blue. Railing bases were coated in safety yellow. The biggest challenge was installing railing over and around roof obstructions and in hard to reach roof areas. The project was installed by Jose Rezex of Innovative Contracting Services and lasted approximately 2 1/2 weeks.
